About the Book
This book was borne out of the same fundamental necessity that has fueled many other books and endless Internet sites. Whether you have been diagnosed with a disease such as cancer, atherosclerosis, or diabetes, or you are simply undergoing the process of aging, the answers to medical questions are very individual. The sad fact is that most of us can no longer turn to our physicians exclusively to get complete advice.
I have read countless books and spent hundreds of hours perusing the Internet, and one thing I have learned is that millions of people are looking for answers to their medical questions – and many of these answers can be found outside of their physicians’ offices. Perhaps the main reason for this quest over the past few years is that many of us now realize that we only visit our physician when something is wrong with us – most of us do not go to a doctor’s office to get started on a healthy lifestyle track. Currently most physicians are not trained in nutrition, and many do not even support the use of supplements, regardless of the overwhelming scientific evidence about the benefits of supplement use. The good news is that a new breed of physician is emerging. Integrative and functional medical doctors are focused on healthy lifestyle medicine.
This book offers a simple, straightforward approach to living well at one hundred©. While this
concept has many meanings, we choose to look at it as a “way” of not only living disease-free, but as a “way” of living as naturally and vitally as possible. The book’s focus is on achieving wellness and avoiding illness.
Over the past century, the average life expectancy has more than doubled. The extension of human longevity is one of our greatest human achievements. While the understanding of and implementation of good hygiene practices has played a major role in reducing deaths associated with infectious diseases, medical breakthroughs have allowed us to live longer in the face of potentially dangerous conditions such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. However, in order to maintain the tremendous gains we have made, we must become partners in our own health and more actively participate in the choices that will impact it. The concept of living well is about how to take charge of our everyday life circumstances. Our own longevity is actually controlled each and every day by the decisions we make. Simple choices – from the food we eat to the exercise we get – can result in previously unsurpassed physical and emotional health.
There are some very promising developments taking place in mainstream allopathic
(or traditional) medicine. Forward-thinking physicians like Arthur Agatston, MD, author of the best-selling book The South Beach Diet, and Michael F. Roizen, MD, and Mehmet C. Oz, MD, authors of You: The Owner’s Manual and You: Staying Young, among other books, are providing us with information that allows for healthy lifestyle changes. The list of authors providing good and healthy information is long and distinguished. In addition to work being done by individual physicians, important research is underway at Harvard, University of Southern California, and my beloved University of Iowa, among other institutions of higher learning.
